If you’ve filed a police report and want to check its status, whether it's been approved, assigned, or closed please follow these steps:

1. Have your report information available

• Report number (if provided at the time of filing)

• Date and location of the incident

• Names of involved individuals (if applicable)

2. Contact the officer who initiated the report

• Call the officer who took your report. If the officer did not provide you with a business card, call the non-emergency number at 309-820-8888 and ask to leave a message with the officer.

• They can confirm if the report has been completed, approved, or forwarded to the criminal investigations division or the McLean County State's Attorney's Office.

3. Email or call the Police Department

• If you are having difficulties reaching the officer who took your report, please send us an email at police@cityblm.org or call 309-434-2355.

 

Note: Certain report types (like active investigations, juvenile cases, or sensitive crimes) may have limited or delayed release if you are needing a copy of the report. The report can be obtained by using the FOIA link above.

The timeline for completing a police investigation varies widely. While some cases are resolved quickly, others may take weeks or even months.

The length of a police investigation depends on several key factors, including the type of crime, the availability of evidence, and the complexity of the case.

More complex cases may need extra time due to:

• Availability of witnesses
• Availability of evidence
• Time to obtain forensic lab results (fingerprints, DNA, etc.)
• Delays in obtaining identification of a suspect
• Review, approval, and processing of subpoenas and warrants

If you filed a report with an officer they may send you a link via text or email in order to submit digital evidence.

This link will take you to a secure portal to upload photos, videos, and other digital evidence.

Note: On some occasions the link to submit the evidence expires or the file size is too large, please notify the officer so they are able to obtain the evidence another way or send another evidence request.
