Recovered property entered into evidence can be returned in most cases. Certain items may be subject to forfeiture or destruction if they are illegal or are considered contraband. All reasonable attempts will be made to contact the owner of recovered property.

The Records Department is staffed Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

If your property has been impounded as evidence by the police, you may be eligible to have it returned once it is no longer needed for the investigation or court proceedings. The process for retrieving your property can vary depending on the circumstances, but here are the general steps to follow:

1. Determine Eligibility for Release

• Your property can only be released once it is no longer required as evidence for an ongoing investigation or criminal case.
• If the property is part of an ongoing investigation or is evidence in a pending trial, it may not be released until the case is concluded.
• Certain items may be subject to forfeiture or destruction if they are illegal or are considered contraband.

2. Contact the Evidence/Property Division

• Reach out to the department or division handling evidence or property. This may be the Police Evidence Unit, Property Division, or a similar department.
• Provide any required case information, such as the report number, your contact information, and the type of property you wish to retrieve.

4. Schedule an Appointment

• Once your request is reviewed, you may be contacted to schedule an appointment to retrieve your property.
• Be prepared to bring a valid ID, and, if applicable, any paperwork provided by the police regarding the property.

5. Pick Up the Property

• At your appointment, you will be required to sign for the property and verify your identity.

7. If Property Cannot Be Released

• In some cases, the property may not be returned due to ongoing investigations, legal restrictions, or evidence in a case.
• If your property is subject to forfeiture or is destroyed by law, you will be notified of these actions, and you may be able to appeal the decision.
