The McLean County Accident Reconstruction Team (MCART) is dedicated to investigating and reconstructing vehicle crashes involving significant damage, serious injuries, or fatalities.

BPD has three officers assigned to MCART, which is comprised of officers from several area agencies. Using advanced forensic techniques and tools, the team provides detailed, objective reconstructions that help determine the sequence of events and factors that contributed to the incident.

MCART officers are trained in accident analysis, physics, and the use of cutting-edge technology, including 3D laser scanning, digital mapping, and analysis of vehicle telematics. Their work goes beyond simply investigating the immediate cause of an accident; they thoroughly examine all contributing factors—such as road conditions, vehicle speed, driver behavior, and environmental elements—to create an accurate and comprehensive reconstruction of the event.

Key responsibilities of the Accident Reconstruction Team include:

  • Crash Scene Analysis: Collecting and preserving physical evidence at the scene, such as skid marks, vehicle debris, and damage patterns, to support the reconstruction of the accident.
  • Reconstructing Accidents: Using scientific principles and advanced technology to recreate the events leading up to, during, and after the crash, including vehicle dynamics, speed calculations, and driver actions.
  • Expert Testimony: Providing expert testimony in court and assisting in legal proceedings by presenting accident reconstructions and analysis to support investigations, claims, and prosecutions.

MCART plays a vital role in the criminal justice system, ensuring thorough investigations into serious accidents, and providing valuable insights that aid in understanding the causes of crashes, improving road safety, and ultimately saving lives.
