Bike Patrol
The Bike Patrol Unit is a dynamic part of our police department, providing a unique and effective approach to community policing. Officers assigned to the Bike Unit patrol neighborhoods, parks, downtown areas, and other public spaces on specially equipped bicycles, allowing for greater mobility, closer community interaction, and a faster response to incidents in areas that may be difficult for vehicles to access.
Officers in the unit are required to complete a 32-hour Police Cyclist course. The training focuses on the use of the bicycle as a patrol vehicle. Participants will spend approximately half of each 8-hour day riding their bikes and negotiating hazards, learning to use the bicycle to make traffic stops, citizen and suspect contacts, and how to safely handle the bicycle in pursuit situations.
