The Bloomington Police Department's K-9 Unit was established in 1991. We remain dedicated to enhancing public safety and supporting law enforcement efforts with highly trained canine teams. Our program is comprised of two canines and handlers. Each handler has their own dog assigned to them.

      K9 J.D. "John Doe" was born in Poland on 06/15/22. He is a Dutch Shepherd and assigned to Officer Followell. Officer Followell has been with the Bloomington Police Department since 2020. He has been a police officer since 2016 and previously served as a K9 handler with the Livingston County Sheriff's Office.      
      K9 Bane was born in the Czech Republic on 09/06/22. He is a Belgian Malinois and assigned to Officer Chambers. Officer Cambers has been with the Bloomington Police Department since 2005. He previously served as a VICE detective, field training officer, and K9 handler.

All of the K-9 teams undergo rigorous training to ensure they are prepared for a wide range of challenges. The canines are trained in narcotics detection, tracking, article searches, and suspect apprehension. They frequently assist and train alongside other agencies.
